Hi, I'm Nicholas Senior

I’m a primary teacher with over a decade of experience teaching mathematics and supporting teachers to improve numeracy instruction. Throughout my career I’ve been fascinated by one question: what actually helps students develop strong number sense?

While working in schools I spent years leading numeracy improvement, coaching teachers, modelling lessons, analysing student data and designing intervention programs. That work gave me the opportunity to test hundreds of teaching ideas in real classrooms and refine the ones that consistently helped students understand mathematics more deeply.

Along the way I developed a range of practical teaching tools, including subitising resources and instructional routines that help students build strong mental models of number. My work has also been published in the Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom journal, and the subitising app I created has been used by thousands of students around the world.

This site brings together the resources and teaching ideas that have had the greatest impact in my own classroom and with the teachers I’ve worked alongside. The flashcards and video library are designed to give teachers practical, ready-to-use tools that strengthen students’ understanding of quantity, number and place value — the foundations that everything else in mathematics is built on.

Everything you’ll find here has been refined through years of classroom practice, collaboration with teachers and a deep interest in how students learn mathematics best.
